What is SMSUA?
SMSUA is a group of men and women providing umpiring services
to the community. We umpire slow pitch and fast pitch from
community leagues to the highest possible level.
Do I need softball experience?
No experience is necessary. Our top-notch training program will
get you ready for the field at whatever level you start. Of course,
if you have softball experience it definitely will help.
Can I set my own schedule?
Yes. You can choose when you want to work, 7 days a
week from April through September, mornings, afternoons,
evenings, weekends - the choice is yours!
What is the training like?
You'll learn the common-sense application of rules and mechanics
in classrooms, gym clinics and on-the-field. We provide the
training you need to be a successful umpire.
What does it cost me?
Membership dues are $60 a year. Almost all umpires also work
school ball which is an additional $40. You will also be required
to submit to a background check.
How much can I make?
Depending on the league and type of ball you work, you
can easily make over $90 a day or more. SMSUA has one
of the highest pay rates in the nation. Most new members
recoup their initial investment (including uniform/equipment
costs) after 6-8 weeks of umpiring a regular schedule.
Will I need to buy my own uniform and equipment?
Yes, but there may be ways to keep your out-of-pocket costs
low. New uniforms and equipment range from $200-$325.
However, do not let the cost of uniform or equipment stop
you from joining. Often, members "recycle" their older equipment
for new umpires.
What type of softball will I work?
You'll umpire all levels of ball including Middle School, Junior High,
High School, and College fast pitch; girls' Junior Olympics fastpitch;
and adult fastpitch and slowpitch.
